The first Le Pain Quotidien bakery restaurant opened in Brussels in 1990, and within a few months 10 more locations opened, all serving the classic, rustic loaves Alain Coumont, our founder, grew up with. Le Pain Quotidien now has more than 210 bakeries in 21 countries.

About the Brand

The tradition of fresh-baked bread is a routine worthy of repetition. Once Alain Coumont decided to open his bakery, he needed to decide on a name. He recalled a memory of his father exclaiming “moi, ce n’est pas mon pain quotidien!” literally translating to “it’s not my daily bread.” Welcome to Le Pain Quotidien, “the daily bread,” where the past meets the present and the future is today.  Our founder Alain made several visionary choices based on his views on food (simple, non-processed, organic, low on fat, with vegan options) and the environment. These choices have made Le Pain Quotidien the unique brand loved by millions globally.

At Le Pain Quotidien, we believe that community is what nurtures, inspires and feeds the soul. Our first communal table on Rue Dansaert in Brussels was built from wood salvaged from the floors of retired Belgian trains. Those simple planks became a tradition. Today, this same rough, reclaimed wood continues to bring rustic comfort to our stores, and the communal tables have become our centerpiece.

Our tables are where friends reconnect and new friendships are forged over the shared appreciation of delicious food and good company. In a space where color comes to life, music mingles with the melody of conversation and fresh-baked smells stoke the imagination, there will always be a place for you at our table.
